Six South Coast beaches retain Blue Flag status

Mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi said Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is proud of its Blue Flag beaches.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has once again been awarded Blue Flag status for six of its beaches, plus one Blue Flag Pilot beach.

The news augurs well for locals and visitors alike because the Blue Flag symbol is a guarantee that the beaches are safe and environmentally sound.

RNM mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi said while all 21 bathing beaches are open and safe for recreational activities, the beaches that retained the Blue Flag Status are Marina, Trafalgar, Ramsgate, Southport, Umzumbe, and Hibberdene while St. Michaels was given a status of Blue Flag Pilot beach.

The municipality has been able to maintain their Blue Flag status for 365 days and they pride themselves on this.
RNM was one of the first municipalities awarded this status, and has maintained it for various beaches every year since the International Awards was started by the Federation Environmental Education (FEE).

“In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained. For us achieving this, demonstrates our commitment in promoting local, domestic and international tourism and ensuring that South Coast remains the tourist destination of choice.

Hibberdene beach is one of six Blue Flag beaches in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

“We will continue working with appropriate stakeholders to ensure that we retain this prestigious status as a reflection of our commitment to quality service and sound beach management,” added Mqadi.
