Beach day for night adder

Snake rescuers were called to remove the snake.

Crocworld Conservation Centre which offers a free snake removal service on the mid-South Coast, received a call last Friday about a puff adder which landed a little too close to the ocean in Pennington, and was seen slithering around on the shore-break.

Once the snake catchers arrived at the scene and had a closer look, it was discovered that the snake was in fact a Rhombic night adder.

This is a common and widespread species which is most active during the day.

According to the conservation centre, this species inhabits moist habitats where they feed almost exclusively on amphibians.

Their cytotoxic venom causes pain and swelling and antivenom is ineffective in the treatment of their bites.

“While they are not life-threatening, children and small pets often show significant symptoms and may require medical attention,” stated Crocworld.

The adder was safely removed and released into a more suitable habitat.
