Boreholes, electricity for Umzumbe residents
These communities will now be able to do everything they wished for with the electricity.
It was a joyous occasion for KwaMgayi residents under Umzumbe Municipality as Ugu District Municipality handed over two boreholes through a project funded by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) recently.
Two other boreholes are still under construction in the area.
These boreholes produce 6000l per hour, meaning water will always be available.
In January this year, Cogta provided funding of R4-m to Ugu, to build hand pumps and boreholes in Umzumbe and Umuziwabantu.
The boreholes handed over were part of the projects funded by this grant.
The MEC for Cogta, Sihle Zikalala, mayor of Ugu Phumlile Mthiyane, mayor of Umzumbe Bongani Nyuswa along with other local leaders were present to officially hand over the boreholes, as well as an electrification project.
Some 334 houses in the community of Siphofu and KwaGwabu, also in Umzumbe benefited from the electrification project.
Zikalala visited two houses to check if the electricity was working, and he also gave the occupants electrical appliances as gifts.
“We promise those who have no electricity or water yet, that it will come. Eventually we will bring service delivery to all people.”
He also pleaded with people not to connect electricity illegally.
The MEC said the electrification project cost R10-m and that in the next financial year they will ask for more money to continue the project in the area.
