Doctor in court for rape

The bail application will said to be finalised this week.

A doctor employed at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital has been suspended following his arrest on charges of rape last week.

The suspension was served by the Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal.

The doctor, aged 42, had appeared in court this week for a formal bail application.

However, the matter was not finalised, and has been carried over to Thursday. The doctor has remained in police custody.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge, confirmed that Port Shepstone Saps had opened a case of rape when a woman (20) said she was raped by the doctor at the hospital on Sunday, August 28.

Mpinge said the woman had gone to the hospital to receive treatment for wounds when the incident occurred.

“The 42-year-old doctor was arrested and charged. He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday and the case was postponed for a formal bail application. The doctor has remained in police custody.”

According to sources, the doctor had been based at the hospital for several years.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has noted, with grave concern, the rape allegations levelled against the doctor.

“What is of serious concern is that the incident is alleged to have taken place within a health facility, during Women’s Month, and against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to address gender based violence,” the statement read.
