Mystery over missing Durban man

A strenuous search for the Durban man included members of the SAPS Search and Rescue unit.

A vehicle belonging to a missing Durban man has been found along a footpath leading to the beach near Shelly Beach.

While the vehicle, a white Hyundai i10, has been located, there is still no trace of Nieshel Roopun (30) from Asherville, Durban.

The i10 had been stripped of its wheels and other parts.

His family filed a missing person’s case at the Sydenham police station last Saturday, after they grew concerned that they had not seen him since Thursday evening, July 28.

Photos of Roopun and his car were posted on Facebook, and friends and family are praying for his safe return.

However, last Sunday night a private security company was alerted in connection with the abandoned Hyundai in the bushes along Marine Drive in Shelly Beach.

Port Shepstone Saps spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge confirmed the incident. He said it’s alleged that the vehicle had been stripped of its wheels, and that no occupants were in the vehicle when it was found.

“After police were contacted, an initial investigation revealed that the vehicle belonged to a 30-year-old man who had been reported missing in Sydenham.”

Roopun’s family was contacted and his vehicle was towed away. A search was done by various units, including Saps Search and Rescue up until yesterday (Wednesday) with no success.

A family member told the Herald that Roopun is employed at Ethekwini Municipality.

On the day of his disappearance, he was wearing a yellow T-shirt, grey shorts and black sandals. He is about 1.65m tall and has a beard.

“He could not be visiting anyone on the South Coast as there are no family members or friends there. He used to buy and sell vehicles as a form of extra income in Durban. We are not coping and extremely worried. When we viewed his car in Shelly Beach, nothing of value was found, even the car radio was taken. We request the public’s assistance with factual information on the whereabouts or sightings of Nieshel,” said a family member.
