Major change for Ugu tourism

The launch function was held at San Lameer.

A significant change has taken place in tourism, with Ugu South Coast Tourism and the Ugu South Coast Development Agency amalgamating to become South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise.

The new entity was announced at a launch function at San Lameer last Friday.

At the tourism launch at San Lameer are Ayanda Zondo and Sthembile Bhengu from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.

The entity is still under Ugu District Municipality but has a new board it will report to.

Municipal Manager for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Max Mbili said the amalgamation will save money because it will operate with one board and CEO.

“Both entities were renting two premises and now we will save because they will move into one office. The South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise will drive the economic development of this district, it will ensure that the economy is resuscitated after the Covid-19 pandemic and the April floods.”

The new board comprises seven people, three members from the agency which is led by Dr Sipho Nzimande, three members from tourism and one independent member, Chantel Elliott.

“The whole purpose of us being here is to have one entity running economic development. Also, there will be no red tape as its operation will be guided by the Companies Act.”

Phelisa Mangcu continues as CEO. Her contract ends next year and she will remain until the end of her term, and then the board will appoint a new CEO.

The new board has executive powers and therefore will not be making recommendations to Ugu, however there will be matters it will have to consult with Ugu, especially when it’s time to pass its budget.

The new chairperson, Dr Nzimande said the entity’s intentions and objectives are the same, but importantly it has challenges.

“There are challenges in the sector and in the district. And it’s important that during these challenges, we collaborate and have a shared vision, so that we can save on resources.”

Nzimande stressed that all sectors have to work together to drive the economy of the district.
