Disabled drivers obtain licences

Paraplegic Viran Maniram continues to defy the odds.

Magazi’s Learners and Driving for the Disabled, a non-profit organisation in Port Shepstone has helped several people with special needs obtain their learner’s and driver’s licences recently.

Founder and instructor of the school, Viran Maniram is a paraplegic and wheelchair-bound as a result of a vehicle accident in 1997. “Being disabled and teaching others with special needs takes patience and commitment. It is easier to understand each other as we are in the same boat.”

Viran also instructs students from the rural areas, and being able to speak isiZulu fluently makes communication easier. He has also completed an entry level sign language course.

“I teach in an adapted vehicle that accommodates a person with special needs. Some of the students have not sat behind the wheel before and being able to drive their own vehicle will be a huge achievement, allowing them the opportunity for employment and independence,” he added.

Magazi’s officially opened its doors in June 2021.

He thanked the National Lotteries Commission, the principal funder as well as other support structures and sponsors. Students also make a financial contribution towards their lessons, for the long-term sustainability of the organisation.

Jason Kruger of Port Shepstone recently received his driver’s licence from Magazi’s Learners and Driving for the Disabled.
