Village Eagles enjoy challenging course at Selborne

Selborne Golf Club was thanked for the excellent hospitality.

Yes, we are living in challenging times.

Petrol costs more than beer, the Rand in my pocket has shrunk, and that is not because it went through the washing machine and even the news channels have been victim to the parental guidance button on the remote so that adults are not exposed to bad news. But hey, we need to count our blessings.

For the Village Eagles that is definitely the case on the first Tuesday of every month when we can fly to one of the four beautiful golf courses situated not far from our nests. This month we flew to Selborne Golf Club. With South Africa boasting many golf estates, we are so blessed that Denis Barker had the vision to develop the very first one right here in our backyard.

As usual, Selborne was a pleasure to play. A challenging course indeed, evidence of which was the lost ball count that topped 150. In fact Ken McKenzie was spot on when he forecast the exact number of balls to be lost as 151. Take up fortune telling Ken, you will make a fortune.

Thanks to the management and staff of Selborne Golf Club for a great course, excellent hospitality and wholesome snacks, all of which contributed to another enjoyable day.

Although the playing format for the Village Eagles is based on team spirit and enjoyment, the competitive side of participants is always evident and it was the four ball of Ben Enslin, Dennis Kamstra, Cathy Kamstra and Steve Stead that took away the top prize, kindly sponsored by Selborne, with a score of 96 points.

Best Lady for the day was Sarie Hall on 41 individual points and Best Man was Roly Tickle who scored a commendable 43 points. The recipients of the Stone Last Trophy were Sue Boucher, Mervyn Perry, Keith Findlay and Glen Scott and to their credit they were certainly not far from the other prize winners with a respectable score of 83 points.

Our next game is our annual charity fundraising day at Umdoni. Let’s hope we make a ton of money for those less fortunate than what we are.
