The beautiful community project ‘Tidy Towns‘ is spreading its wings and has been welcomed by a passionate and concerned Port Shepstone community.

Tidy Towns is a voluntary community initiative and has been working to restore public spaces, and create cleaner and safer environments for all.

Last Friday, a group of voluntary community members together with Law Enforcement, Saps, Umbango River Conservancy and Lazer 911 Security assured that they are ready to work together to return the Port Shepstone beachfront to a welcoming and pleasant public space.

Clean up has started and the team is doing an incredible job around the dilapidated King Prawn and former Banana Express station.

Businessman, Stephen Herbst spearheaded the Port Shepstone group meeting, and was pleased to see the support from the various sectors.

“Because the King Prawn area has been left out over the years, dirt attracts dirt and that pushes people away from having any family time along this prestigious beachfront. People are drinking, urinating, littering, and crime is a major problem.”

He encouraged the Port Shepstone group to show positivity and by working together they can revive this beautiful area.

Shamin Maharaj from Tidy Towns Port Shepstone said they are grateful to Stephen and his team for their support and assistance to set up.

“The Tidy Towns work done so far is inspiring. We believe that we have one of the better beaches on the South Coast with ideal fishing spots, the lighthouse as a landmark, our tidal and swimming pools and the historical Mzimkhulu River. We are also the business hub of Port Shepstone and its surrounds.”

Shamin added that the team hopes to earn the support of the community and businesses as the work required is massive. “This is a community project with the hope of initiating change and making a difference both to the environment, safety and improve recreational activities in our community.”

Volunteers, people with skills, businesses with equipment and machinery are encouraged to support Tidy Towns Port Shepstone. The team is in need of donations to purchase equipment and to pay labourers. Any contribution will be appreciated and will be channelled towards the task at hand.

The team has encouraged the community to like its Facebook page: Tidy Towns Port Shepstone as regular updates will be posted.
