Music, meat and mascots at Margate CC

Members are doing their utmost to promote the club during the idyllic winter season.

Margate Country Club has been finding success in increasing their participation numbers in competitions since introducing generous meat prizes on Thursdays, Saturdays and business days.

The betterball and individual knockout competitions are progressing well with some surprising results.

The winter over-seeding has produced excellent results and the greens are running great and holding exceptionally well.

Thanks to Andrew Curlewis and his hard work, the course and greens are looking good.

It seems the club has acquired a stray dog on the course and has been adopted as the official mascot. Golfers are urged to avoid hitting the ball anywhere near our furry friend. He doesn’t have a name yet, although some have suggested Spotty or Bryson.

The business day last Friday was won by Piet Fourie, Jaco van der Wal, Deon Meyer and Johan Neethling on 93 points.

Runners-up were Angus and Una McLachlan, with Robin Shuttleworth and Frik van Zyl.

Nearest the pins were Matt Cotterrell (4th) and John Ford (11th).

Saturday’s betterball Stableford was won by Alan Davies and John Ford on 45 points, from Greg Litkie and Peter McCarthy on 43 points.

Monthly Mug was played the week before and won on nett 68 by Robin Shuttleworth, with Matt Cotterrell next on nett 74.

B division honours went to Johann Erasmus on nett 66, with Alan Davies next on nett 71.

The C division was won on 39 points by Peter McCarthy, counting out Flip Fourie.

Nearest the pins were Carlos Pereira (8th) and Graham Massam (11th).
