Temporary solution for refuse collection backlog

Special refuse collection schedules are circulated daily.

Due to ongoing service delivery protest action at Farm Abrams near Umdoni Municipality’s Humberdale Landfill Site, there is still a backlog in refuse collection.

A temporary solution to address the backlog has been implemented following Ethekwini Municipality’s extension of intergovernmental relations by opening its Illovo Landfill Site to Umdoni Municipality.

“Since mid-June, Umdoni has been dumping its waste at this site following the illegal closure of the municipality’s landfill site, and the current situation has strained operations as the current demand strongly contends the available resources,” said Umdoni communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

“The waste management teams are working around the clock to alleviate the backlog through a specialised collection schedule until normal operations resume.”

The special daily collection schedules are circulated on various social media groups by the municipality and councillors.
