OPINION: Salute to community organisations on the South Coast

"The ratepayers associations, community policing forums, environmental groups, NGOs and NPOs all give their time and effort to ensure the betterment of our society on the South Coast."

While we are all aware of the devastation visited on our communities by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the social unrest riots and more recently the effects of the severe flooding in KZN, the people of the South Coast are still standing with heads held high.

Despite the very visible lack of efficient service delivery from our municipalities, a situation which has become the norm in recent years, the key features of our tourist economy have not been allowed to fall into disrepair as a result of all these negative events.

Why then is this the case?

Let us give a huge amount of credit to those community organisations who have refused to allow our coast to fall into decay.

The continued operation of small businesses and others after these considerable setbacks is in no small way due to the efforts of the various business associations and their members.

The ratepayers associations, community policing forums, environmental groups, NGOs and NPOs all give their time and effort to ensure the betterment of our society on the South Coast.

Lately, however, a great deal of credit must be given to the people who support and operate the Tidy Towns initiative which has made such a huge difference to our beaches in Margate and adjacent areas.

Not only do these activities make our beach areas attractive and usable, there is a further social benefit in that the people who are doing the work for Tidy Towns are previously disadvantaged unemployed residents, and in some cases recovering addicts who have been given hope and an income due to those efforts.

It is clear that all of the people who are part of these organisations care deeply for the South Coast and its residents.

I would like to salute our unsung heroes who make the South Coast the paradise we all enjoy.
