Eagles make some South Coast rugby history

The win came after two away defeats, to Kokstad and Matatiele, and the Eagles were aware that Kapaailand could not field their strongest side last Saturday.

History in the making. That was what the Esayidi Eagles said when they established a new rugby club at the South Coast.

The Esayidi Eagles played their first ever home game – history in the making – against Kapaailand, the current league champions, last Saturday and beat them 14-8.
Jason Muzi, on the right wing, scored for the Esayidi Eagles, with Lethu Tshezi slotting three penalties.

“We are grateful to Margate Sport School and more specifically to Grace and Andries Fourie who provide their facilities for us to use as our home ground,” said club chairman Theuns Steenkamp.

The win came after two away defeats, to Kokstad and Matatiele, and the Eagles were aware that Kapaailand could not field their strongest side last Saturday.

“The most important thing for the Esayidi Eagles is to compete in the Presidents Cup, where rugby is still played in the spirit and tradition of real platteland rugby. It’s a privilege for the Esayidi Eagles to be part of it.”

Theuns said the aim of the club is to strengthen rugby on the South Coast. That is why they work very closely with the South Coast Warriors and the Southern KZN U20s, as well as the SKZN Rugby Academy.

“Although we play under our own identity as the Esayidi Eagles we played in the Presidents club of SKZN to represent the South Coast Warriors third team.”

Players still under 20 remain available to play for Southern KZN when there is not a fixture clash, and senior players are also available to play for the South Coast Warriors.

Eagles players mainly consist of students at the Esayidi TVET College and the club gives the young men the opportunity to study and play rugby.
