Ugu approves over R1-bn final budget

Some R347 374 000 has been allocated to the capital budget and R1 338 587 275 to the operational budget.

Ugu District Municipality approved a R1 685 961 961 final budget at a meeting at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council chambers, last Thursday.

The Democratic Alliance voted against this budget, and also stated that Ugu already has very poor service delivery.

Tariff increases are driven by an Eskom tariff increase of 9.6% and Umgeni Water tariff increase of above 3% on bulk water supply and staff salary increment of 4.8%.

Some R48 000 000 has been allocated for rolling out the rural Ventilated Improved Pit toilets

Another R215 505 300 has been set aside for water and sanitation infrastructure programme.

Mayor Phumlile Mthiyane said that Ugu has completed the construction of Mhlabatshane Dam phase 10 at Umzumbe which is one of its projects.

Other projects such as KwaXolo Bulk Water Supply, Umzimkhulu Off Channel Storage Dam, Mtamvuna Water Works, Margate Sewer Pipeline Replacement, Umzimkhulu Permanent Reinforced Concrete Berm and others are still underway.

According to the mayor, some of these projects have had challenges.

“Some of these projects are experiencing challenges resulting from acts of vandalism and inadequate water sources,” said Mthiyane.

She also presented R30 529 814 for the amalgamated entities Ugu South Coast Tourism and South Coast Development Agency.
