Public warned against fraudsters

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said people need to be aware of persons who wish to use their personal cellphone to make an emergency call while out shopping.

Port Shepstone police appeals to the public to be aware of people with intentions of defrauding or scamming them out of their personal property.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge, said people need to be aware of persons who wish to use their personal cellphone to make an emergency call while out shopping.

Mpinge said the fraudster will leave a shopping basket or trolley with unpaid purchases for you to safeguard while they pretend to make a call and walk off with your cellphone.

“The public must also be aware that a bank will not call to verify your pin and other confidential information. If you are uncomfortable with giving details even to a legitimate caller, rather go to the bank personally to update details. Be cautious about notifications that you have won a competition, especially if you did not enter any. Do not respond with any personal information,” said Mpinge.
