Port Shepstone Regional Hospital celebrates International Nurses’ Day

After all formalities, the nurses and guests were served a delicious lunch and cold drinks.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital successfully held its Nurses‘ Day Celebration at St Martin De Porres School recently. The high-profile event saw the presence of dignitaries and senior officials from all over the district, including Ugu Health District Director, Linda Dlamini, Nursing Managers of Ugu hospitals, Labour Unions Representatives, Nokuthula Ndlela – Port Shepstone Nursing Campus Principal and Lectures, retired nurses and the current serving nurses from Port Shepstone Hospital.

The speakers of the day echoed the fact that nurses are truly the pillar of healthcare service and as active people who are responsible for helping others from birth, right up to a stage where they give their last breath, therefore nurses must be celebrated and encouraged to remain a beacon of light in communities.

The highlight of the day was the launch of the hospital nursing drum majorettes which provided a spectacular show that entertained all who attended the event. In her speech, Mandisa Maqutu, the hospital nursing manager said the drum majorettes in the nursing profession is an old tradition which sets a good example of discipline, respect, professionalism and team work. “It teaches nurses to follow the good example set by their leaders and encourages them to keep up with professional ethics, execute their work efficiently and with utmost dedication,” she said.

Keynote speaker, Linda Dlamini encouraged nurses to heal the world by upholding their noble nursing standards and serving the community with humanity. “Let no patients leave your ward or consulting room not feeling better than when they came in,” she said.

Thoko Ntuli, Ugu District ethics and professionalism champion, made no secret of the fact that there could be some nurses who need to improve their ethics and professionalism.

She said a great improvement could be seen if all nurses could have conscience and remember that every man is a creation of God and thus deserves to be treated with utmost love and respect, irrespective of their religion, culture, colour, educational level and their social standing in society.

Awards were given to all the nursing staff and units for outstanding performance in 2021 financial year. These included professional nurses for their diligence, good ward administration, pioneers of the nursing majorettes and nursing management team, including the PRO for organising the event.

Nurses were thrilled to receive messages of support from the senior management of the hospital and from the executives of companies sponsoring their event which include Port Shepstone Sanlam Sky, Avbob, The Unlimited, DENOSA and Golden Glo.
