Waste management project cleans 350 hotspots in Umdoni

Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi commented on the success of this project as a a result of collaborative efforts between the municipality, ward councillors and the project beneficiaries.

The Municipal Implementation of Innovative Solid Waste Management project has been successfully executed in Umdoni, to ensure improved waste management.

This four-month pilot project reeled in 394 unemployed Umdoni youth participants and focused on waste management education and awareness campaigns, cleaning of illegal dumpsites, cleaning of the Umzinto central business district, waste minimisation and recycling, extension of street sweeping, litter picking and waste collection services in areas previously not serviced by the local municipality.

“To ensure successful implementation of this programme, these workers underwent thorough training on the bin-bag system, separation of waste and re-use and recycling among other aspects of waste management,” said Umdoni communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

Through this project, the municipality has cleaned 350 waste hotspots, cleared 30 illegal dumpsites, cleaned and ensured the upkeep of 16 skip areas and implemented 13 awareness and clean-up campaigns.

Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi commented on the success of this project as a a result of collaborative efforts between the municipality, ward councillors and the project beneficiaries.

“While this programme was addressing long standing waste management issues, the participants also benefitted with acquiring knowledge, temporary employment and further attained certificates of service,” said mayor Khathi.

“All parties involved worked cooperatively to ensure an efficient waste management service and cleaner communities.”
