Pennington road repair project underway

The PRRA emphasises the fact that the team will consist of professionals to ensure that the work is carried out efficiently.

Numerous roads in Pennington are in a critical state of disrepair due to many years of neglect and lack of maintenance.

This has caused inconvenience to the residents as some roads cannot be utilised at all, or if so, there is a huge risk of vehicle damage.

Taking matters into their own hands, several members of the Pennington community united to establish a way in which they can tackle the infinite number of potholes on their residential roads.

One of the many Pennington roads damaged by potholes.

Thus, the Road Repair Project was born and will be undertaken by the Pennington Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (PRRA) – a non-profit organisation.

“The objective of this project is to provide a short term, interim solution to restore the roads to serviceable condition until Umdoni Municipality has rehabilitated and or rebuilt the roads or instituted a road repair programme of their own,” explained the PRRA chairman, Martin Hanlon.

The PRRA emphasises the fact that the team will consist of professionals to ensure that the work is carried out efficiently.

The team’s secretary, Mary McKenzie, stated that this will not be an overnight job as it is a long process to get the desired outcome, and that all the potholes cannot be repaired at once, therefore the roads will be prioritised.

“The key criteria for prioritisation will be road condition and usage of the road,” she said.

“The worst and most utilised roads will be repaired first, followed by the rest in accordance with their priority rating as already determined by a civil engineer.

The PRRA explained that it is crucial this project be implemented as Pennington properties are devaluing due to the condition of roads and impacting residents’ health and safety.

“Medical and police services may be unable to access residents in need or respond to a crime scene” added McKenzie.

Some of the worst roads prioritised are Botha Place, Mahogany Road, Garrick Crescent, Marlin Drive, Porpoise Road and Shark Avenue.

To get the ball rolling, donations are required and residents are being asked to contribute financially or to sponsor material or equipment needed for the road repairs.

Residents can be certain that all donations relating to this project will be ring-fenced and utilised for this project only.
