Golf goes to the dogs… for a worthy cause, of course

There was quite a buzz at Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday for the Lower South Coast SPCA golf day fundraiser, which was finally played after four (!) inclement weather-induced postponements.

It was worth the wait as sponsors and golfers came to the fore in a big way.

Golfers filled the field and sponsors made the effort to spend time on the tee boxes. It all made for a wonderful atmosphere on the day.

The husband-and-wife team of Peter and Sue Kupisiewicz won the event on 45 points last Saturday.

Runners-up were Malcolm Greenland and Derick Pieterse on 44 points.

There were three teams on 42 points, with the countout favouring Derek James, who made a 66 gross look so easy and David Rush.

Fourth place went to Wally Robinson and Ant Hughes, with Werner Duggan and Christer Solgevik being forced to settle for fifth place.

Rina Rito and Casper (ghost) were sixth on 41 points, counting out Rory O’Donnell and Colin McKay, as well as Burt van Stade and Guy Yeadon.

There were plenty of nearest the pins, longest drives and other fun shots to be had on the day.

Nearest the pin: 4th – Pierre van de Walle, 8th – Bob Clark, 11th – Anton Kohrmann, 14th – Doug Trevarthan.

Nearest the pins for two:2nd – Kim Hertzberger and Sue Kupisiewicz, 12th – Colin McKay and Karen Bridgeford, 13th – Andrew Miller.

Longest drive: 7th – David Rush and Janet Lehman, 12th – Gavin Sole and Irene Schanda, 17th – André Ollewagen and Heather Anderson.

Best shot on 8th (with marshmallow) – Justin Boyce.

Mike Davis, SPCA Operations, thanked the community for its support. He said every hole had been sponsored and that the support had been out of this world.

“A total of around R42 000 was raised on the day for which SPCA is most grateful,” he said.
