Ugu blames load shedding for water cuts

The municipality is blaming Eskom's load shedding, even though some areas had no water before load shedding was implemented.

Communities of Ugu District Municipality have not had water for weeks.

Ramsgate, Margate, Gamalakhe, Bhobhoyi, Nyandezulu are a few of the areas that have been without water.

The municipality is blaming Eskom’s load shedding, even though some areas had no water before load shedding was implemented.

Ugu’s acting spokesperson Mondli Ncane said the municipality is in the process of applying to Eskom to exclude critical points from power cuts due to the fact that it affects the entire system.

People have been complaining about how difficult it is without water in their households.

Social media has also been buzzing with people venting their anger.

“We have applied for funding from national government to assist us in purchasing additional generators in order to sustain our systems during load shedding. Currently the generators we have are inadequate to sustain the systems,” said Ncane.

He added the municipality has storage dams as a backup, however the demand surpasses supply, causing intermittent supply.

In January Ugu received R19 million funding from KZN Cogta to upgrade St Helen’s Rock, however these upgrades are still to be done.

“Ugu apologises to our communities for intermittent supply they may have experienced in the past few weeks,” said Ncane.

He assured communities that they are working on resolving the issue.
