Scottburgh lifesavers earn medals at provincial champs

From the moment they set foot on the beach, it was obvious that the club spirit was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

For the first time in more than a decade, 15 men and three women, all volunteer lifeguards from Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club competed in the KZN Champs on Dairy Beach in Durban last weekend.

They made a great impression wearing their beautiful sponsored T-shirts and special club swimming costumes.

From the moment they set foot on the beach, it was obvious that the club spirit was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

As most of the lifeguards were working during the busy summer holidays season, they only had two months of dedicated training in the ocean, on the beach and in the swimming pool before the competition.

The Scottburgh team achieved astonishing results for a relatively small South Coast club.

“It was a true team effort as each of our members contributed to the success,” said Keith Jones, club chairman.

“Our team placed fourth out of eight clubs in the KZN open seniors, while individuals won one gold, two silver and four bronze medals, and the beach relay team won gold.”

“It’s important to remember that nearly all team members contributed to the overall success, as competitors scored points right down to eighth position.”

Tyne van Achterbergh competed in the first competition as a junior under 15, and he achieved amazing results by winning the overall best male competitor in his age category and brought home four gold medals and one silver.

“We are really proud of our team and their achievements and we are sending our best eight competitors to Gqeberha for the SA Champs in two weeks,” added Jones.
