Author publishes first children’s book

South Coast resident and author, Tracy Millar, has just self-published her first children’s book, Gerald and Friends.

The book, which is an adventure series aimed at children between the ages of four and eight, tells the story of a giraffe calf named Gerald and is based on a wildlife estate in Limpopo.

Gerald makes a lot of friends and they get up to all sorts of adventures in the bush.

The giraffe calf has a crooked ear, and although sometimes teased about it, he keeps a positive attitude and only cares for going on adventures with his best friend Daisy the duiker.

“Children love to read about animals, so why not read about our beautiful wildlife,” said Millar.

“Conservation is so important and educating our children is vital to its existence, so the book incorporates some educational facts with questions at the end making it a learning tool for both child and adults.”

The idea for Gerald and Friends came from when Millar took a walk in the bush and ended up watching a giraffe family playing around.

Although the author resides in Bazley, she and her family travels back and forth between KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo as her husband owns a construction company and builds houses in Hoedspruit. Through travelling she was able to experience wildlife in Limpopo and shares some of this through her book.

One of the biggest challenges the author faced at first was finding time to write the book.

“Also when you do have time, you need the inspiration which doesn’t always come together at the same time,” she explained.

Millar has always been fond of writing, and even recalls her schooling days where she was often asked to stand in front of her class and read her stories out loud.

Her end goal is to write about other adventures, and she is already busy with the second book where she will introduce a new friend to the animal group.
