Umdoni sets up ward committees

The formation of ward committees is to ensure continuous links between the community, councillors and the municipality.

The office of the speaker, led by Umdoni speaker Cllr Mbali Cele conducted an election process with the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs, for the establishment of ward committees in Umdoni Municipality.

The process was guided by Section 73 of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998)

The formation of ward committees is to ensure continuous links between the community, councillors and the municipality.

“Local government is closest to the people and the establishment of ward committees is one of the ways to ensure that members of the community of Umdoni are able to give input to the decisions of our council,” said Cllr Cele.

“We therefore applaud the level of commitment illustrated by members of the community to ensure that these structures are put in place.”

Umdoni’s communications manager, Sphelele Cele, explained that ward committees are a statutory structure that is recognised by the municipal council as a consultative body and official communication channel on matters affecting the wards.

It includes among others representation of the community in the compilation and implementation of the Integrated Development Plan, ensuring constructive interaction between the municipality and the community and ensuring active participation of the community in the municipality’s budgetary process among others.

Under Umdoni, the community elected 190 community members which translates to 10 members per ward committee.
