Karetekas excel at provincial champs

The Ugu karate team was made up of students from various affiliated dojos in the region and faced stiff competition at the provincial tournament.

A local group of karatekas represented the Ugu district region at the KZN provincial karate championships in Tongaat recently.

The Ugu karate team was made up of students from various affiliated dojos in the region and faced stiff competition at the provincial tournament.

“It was a hard fought weekend and we are of very proud of our karatekas for the number of medals they have brought back to the region,” said the WKF Karate Ugu region senseis involved in preparing the team for the event.

The delegates of KZN and Ugu representatives at the KZN provincial karate championships are (from left) Sensei Njabulo Mthembu – KZN vice-president, Sensei Coenie Vrey – Ugu regional president, Helen Cele – KZN DSR sports promotion and development officer, Hanshi Sonny Pillay – Karate South Africa president, Thenbanini Yengwa – KZN DSR Ugu district manager, Sensei Mathusi Mhlongo, Shihan Frank Moodley – Ugu region and Lara Mbili – KZN DSR sports promotion and development officer.

A group of selected karatekas will represent the province at the upcoming KSA national championships to be held from March 4 to 5. They are wished everything of the best at the upcoming tournament.
