Regional hospital undergoes clinical nursing audit

KZN Health nursing director, Cynthia Sosibo paid a visit to the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital recently, a trip that saw her and her team conduct a clinical nursing management audit in five inpatient wards and emergency department at the hospital to assess quality nursing care.

Along with Sosibo was the deputy nursing managers from three district local government hospitals, two community healthcare centres, and the principal of the Port Shepstone Nursing Campus.

“The director’s visit to the district had four focus areas which included support to nursing managers; a clinical nursing management audit; an empowerment session with Port Shepstone hospital nurses from all categories and a formal meeting with nursing managers on clinical governance, ethics and professionalism,” said Phumza Morai, Public Relations Officer of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

Other focus areas included the inspection of the ward and unit cleanliness, which included assessment of patients’ clothing, bedding, toilets and catering facilities as well as ward administration, patients’ identification, management of medicine refrigerators and emergency trollies.

“The observation data was complemented with structured staff and patient interviews where the information was analysed. The team also benchmarked on areas of good practices within the hospital which included the daily staff allocation register, an initiative of the emergency unit management, and the template for doctors’ ward rounds, an initiative established by the medical ward management.

The hospital’s deputy nursing manager, Mandisa Maqutu together with her assistant nursing managers – Nopasika Tyala, Sandile Gojana, Linda Manipersad, Tsouenyana Patrick and Zithobile Ngxumza welcomed the verbal appraisal made by the team as they wait for the formal report.

“The entire nursing personnel remain committed to delivering quality nursing care to all Port Shepstone Regional Hospital patients under trying circumstances,” Maquthu said.
