Upgrade for Nelson Mandela Drive, main Harding road

There will be 50 job opportunities specifically for the Nelson Mandela Drive upgrade.

Funding to the tune of R92-million has been made available for the reconstruction of the main Harding road and Nelson Mandela Drive in the Port Shepstone CBD.

These roads have been prioritised because of their condition and impact on traffic within the CBD.

Mayor Zero Mqadi said having smooth roads and control of traffic helps with easy access to services.

“Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has partnered with national treasury in providing the municipality with infrastructural services. This includes water, sanitation, electricity and roads.”

Margate Construction has been appointed for the work on Nelson Mandela Drive, at a cost of R38-million.

The projected is expected to be complete by December, with work having started recently.

Nelson Mandela Drive will become a one-way street from the southern end to the northern end – from Shoprite supermarket when entering the CBD, right up to old Capitec bank) from Ryder Street to Bulwer Street.

“The road from Sasol garage to the Umbango bridge will be upgraded, from two lanes to three lanes.”

Storm water management, paved sidewalks, new streetlights, litter bins and vendor shelters will form part of the upgrade.

Zibele Construction will be doing main Harding road upgrade at a cost of R54-million, with the project expected to be complete by the end of January next year.

“This upgrade will start from the N2 national road to the Umbango bridge tying into the Neslon Mandela Drive.”

The mayor said that the CBD will ‘never be the same’ after these upgrades as they will help control traffic in Port Shepstone.

These are very busy roads which connects the CBD, N2 and Marburg and therefore road users are encouraged to use alternative roads when entering the CBD.

Spokesman for RNM, Simon April, asked that motorists and road users bear with them and apologised for the inconvenience.
