No mayor for RNM, no response from Cogta

The Herald has also contacted Cogta on the issue, but it has not as yet responded to emails and phone calls.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has not yet responded to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s (RNM) request for intervention on the matter of electing a mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip.

Since the first council meeting in November 2021, RNM has not been able to elect these positions due to political factions within the African National Congress (ANC).

The Herald has also contacted Cogta on the issue, but it has not as yet responded to emails and phone calls.

Recently the Herald contacted ANC coordinator Xolani Luthuli and he said the party was trying to meet with the provincial leadership to discuss the challenges and issues they are facing.

He had also promised that by mid-December the council would have met and elected for these positions.

Till today RNM still has no mayor and is functioning only with the leadership of the speaker Zodwa Mzindle.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has also written to Cogta to call for an urgent meeting as challenges within RNM show no sign of ending.

In a statement released by Francois Rodgers, MPL, he said this situation cannot be allowed to continue.

“Those living within RNM have already endured years of poor service delivery. They cannot be expected to put up with any more. With committee meetings scheduled to commence shortly and the municipality’s Adjustments Budget needing to be tabled, the lack of an executive committee is set to pose a direct risk to service delivery.”
