Karateka on path to glory

There were also medals for both Tiaan Retief (Kumite 12/13 Over 55kg) and Divan du Toit (Kumite 14/15 Under 63kg) who both won bronze medals.

The KSA Open and Elite Karate Championships recently took place in Tongaat, Durban.

A group of karateka from Suid Natal Martial Arts Academy attended the tournament.

It was attended by karateka from all around the country under very strict Covid protocols.

Two separate tournaments were held – Open division which could be attended by any karateka in the country and the Elite competition which was held for those karateka who are ranked in the top 6 in the country in each division.

In the Open tournament Blake Hogan (kumite 12/13 Under 45kg) and Marcel du Toit (Kumite 12/13 Over 55kg) both secured gold, while Tinelle Burger (Kumite 16/17 Over 59kg) came second in her event.

There were also medals for both Tiaan Retief (Kumite 12/13 Over 55kg) and Divan du Toit (Kumite 14/15 Under 63kg) who both won bronze medals.

Tyler Hogan, who is currently ranked number one in the country for U21 Male Kata attended the Elite tournament, earning silver medals in Male U21 Kata and Open Senior Kata.

Sensei Coenie Vrey from Suid Natal Martial Arts Academy said he was extremely proud of all the karateka who attended these tournaments.
