Cyclists wrap it up in Scottburgh

Scottburgh welcomed hundreds of cyclists for the final stages of the KAP sani2c mountain biking race on Saturday and Sunday.

The final stage of the three day mountain bike stage race started at Jolivet Farm and took riders through sugar cane farms, coastal forest and Vernon Crookes Game Reserve, before arriving at Scottburgh main beach via the Hansgrohe floating bridge across the lagoon.

Cyclists, including several mid-South Coast representatives such as JP Nel from Scottburgh Caravan Park, Scottburgh doctors Dr Bruce Longmore and Dr Minette McCabe as well as renowned Scottburgh local Flavio Scarpa, then had to travel another 2km to the finish line at Scottburgh Golf Club.

The top seven teams in the race cycled together for the first half.

DSV Pro Cycling and Absolute Motion dropped off the pace and at the 39km mark at Vernon Crookes, the five teams of PYGA Euro Steel 1 and 2, Imbuko Giant, TypeDev NanoTime and Insect Science were left to fight it out.

PYGA Euro Steel’s Matthys Beukes and Gert Heyns as well as Motorlease Perigon’s Robyn de Groot and Amy McDougall were victorious and announced as this year’s champions.

“Everyone was fast with peaking after Marathon Champs, so this was definitely one of the harder races to win. sani2c is one of the best stage races in the country so a good one to have for the CV,” said Gert Heyns.

His partner Matthys Beukes went on to add that it was a good weekend of racing, and that feels as though some sort of normality has returned to racing.
