Teenage sisters drown in Sezela dam

Reports indicate that the bodies were recovered at a depth of seven metres.

Sezela sisters, Nosipho (13) and Thandekile Mphuma (15), drowned in the Sezela dam last Sunday (21st) afternoon.

According to police, the girls were swimming with a group of children before they got into difficulty in the dam.

“Nearby swimmers tried to assist the minors, but could not reach them,” explained Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

The young sisters attempted to rescue one another from the deep water before drowning.

Search and rescue dog Bear was used to locate the bodies, and after successfully doing so, divers were able to retrieve them and handed them over to Scottburgh Saps members at the scene.

Reports indicate that the bodies were recovered at a depth of seven metres. Following this incident, Captain Francis advises parents and guardians to supervise their children at all times when out in public spaces, especially near open water.

The drowning is being investigated by Detective Constable Amanda Mtethwa of Scottburgh Detective Service.
