A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his 15-year-old niece.

He was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on December 15.

The court heard how he brutally raped his niece on the afternoon of December 21 last year.

The teenager has been asleep at her home in Boboyi when she was awoken by her uncle.

He locked all the doors, then assaulted and repeatedly raped her.

Finally, when he fell asleep, the girl escaped and sought help.

A case of rape was opened at the time with the Port Shepstone Saps and the docket transferred to Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

His name will be included in the National Offenders Register and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, was pleased with the outcome.

“This sentence will send a strong message to other men who are victimising defenceless women and children and who think that they will get away with it.”
