A record number of 106 players (at the time of writing) have entered for the Ugu Pro-Kennex National Seniors Tennis Tournemant which will be played at various South Coast clubs from December 10 to 13.

These players will come from all parts of the country in search of titles and ranking points, with an incredible 16 from Umtentweni Tennis Club taking part.

Many of these Tweni entrants have entered for the first time in a national event, so it will be interesting to see how they all fare.

In other tennis news, Mthatha-based Solomon ‘Solly’ Maya has been playing at Southbroom Tennis Club for years and it has long been his plan, abetted by former club captain Ron Stirling, to assemble a Mthatha Tennis Club team to take on Southbroom.

Enjoying the tennis match between Southbroom and Mthatha tennis clubs are (from left) Philip Schaffler, Betsie Tayler, Vuyo Vokozela and Solomon Maya.

The dream became reality this weekend when 20 players – and a small, enthusiastic group of supporters – made the journey from the Eastern Cape to take on the locals in a two-day, ladies doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles tournament.

The teams comprised both clubs’ top and intermediate players, as well as some beginners and even juniors.

The weather, though a bit windy, played ball and a great spirit and sportsmanship characterised the very competitive event, which Southbroom managed to win.

Based on the success of the competition, the clubs are planning to make it an annual event, being played alternatively in Southbroom and Mthatha.
