Golf with a twist for a change at Scottburgh GC

It was a game with a difference as we played a Medal Stableford, everyone playing off scratch and adding the handicap at the end.

Spring is in the air. The birds are singing, plants are in bud and the new grass is coming through.

Time to get out and use our sandbags?

Graham Brown once again came to the fore as he scored 42 points – that’s 21 points plus his 21 handicap.

Mike Eley had 39, beating the venerable oldest member Colin Moodie into third place.

There was a feeling of ‘yesteryear’ when last Saturday’s morning and afternoon fields were full.

The clubhouse restaurant and the new look pro shop sponsored the afternoon field which saw a host of visitors, thanks mainly to Mikhail van Brakel’s mates coming a long way to support him.

We managed social distancing in the evening but only just as the bar, patio and lounge were fully seated.

Captain Bob Hall welcomed the visitors (and their girlfriends) and extended special thanks to the sponsors.

These included Johan Barnard of the Shell garage, Koro Creek golf estate, SA Breweries, Rini Martens, Tertius du Toit and the Night Owl pub and restaurant in Benoni.

The winners were grouped into divisions according to the average of the partner’s handicap.

In the A division Darren Walker and Jaques Schwegman amassed 43 points to beat Pete Gilliver and Jack Cubitt into second on 40 points.

Miles Usher and Tony Fisher cleaned up the B division with 47 points, five ahead of Ian Walker and Dudley Palmer on 42.

It was the old stagers of Hans Beuthe (who else) and Brian Richards who took the C division with 43, counting out Thys Swart and Dave Sirey.

Conrad Kleinhans was nearest to the pin on the 5th and Hilton McAuliffe knocked it closest on 13.

In the ladies’ section Esme Hadley and Dolores McAuliffe took first place with 44, Mandy Jones and Linda Hall were second on 39, beating Hayley Gilliver and Debbie du Toit into third, courtesy of the countout.

The last of the Galloping Gillivers, Jason, was not to be left out as he belted a screamer of a drive on the 9th, leaving the ball just 10 metres short of the green.

Favourites for the Stone Last trophy were well and truly beaten as visitors Clive Snyman and Shaun Hoskins hoisted the Stone.

The sponsors really came to town with their generous contributions and there were three auctions.

Ian Walker paid handsomely for a week at Koro Creek golf estate, Graham Brown is off to Munster for a week and Warren Keightly and his friends will sample some fantastic wines.

The evening finished off in great style with a spit braai and live music before we closed everything down before pumpkin time.

Flyer’s footnote: No man or woman has mastered golf until they realise that their good shots are accidents and their poor shots good exercise.
