Some spring treatment is needed across the coast

The beach is a major tourist attraction, one frequented by bathers, surfers, fishermen, diners at the nearby restaurants and by numerous walkers and runners.

A beach-goer slipped and fell on the slimy St Mike’s walkway last weekend.

The area has now been cordoned off and is out of bounds to the public.

Businessman Louis Boshoff who is concerned about the state of the beach facilities, said he had reported the ongoing water leak on many occasions over the last year.

The leak had gotten progressively worse, he said, making the pathway dangerously slippery and causing the bricks to crumble.

“It’s one broken pipe that needs to be fixed behind the ablution block,” he said.

The buildings at St Mike’s beach are also in need of some tender loving care, it seems.

Some could do with a bit of sprucing up, having fallen into a state of disrepair during the long months of the Covid-19 lockdown.

“They are dilapidated but fixable. Hopefully the authorities will attend to it before the holidays, as we want our visitors to have a fantastic stay on the coast,” said Mr Boshoff.

St Mike’s is not alone, the buildings at Tweni and Margate are also in desperate need of fixing up.

However, now that the weather is becoming warmer, it is hoped that the South Coast in general will receive some attention.

When approached for comment, Simon April, Senior Manager: Communications at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said the matter had been referred to the Customer Care Centre which would then refer it to the relevant department.

He added that all service delivery-related matters should be reported to the Customer Care Centre at services@rnm.gov.za
