Back in the swing of things at Umkomaas Golf Club

The course is in great condition, especially given the long layoff and very small ground-staff team, and feedback from players has been very positive.

Umkomaas Golf Club really pulled together during lockdown and a grateful thanks must be extended to our committee who went above and beyond, learning to operate the machinery and going out weekly to keep our course in top condition.

We must also acknowledge the many members who so generously donated money to the club during the period to help pay wages and ensure our loyal staff were not unduly affected.

Since the reintroduction of golf about two months ago we’ve had fantastic support from members and visitors alike and its been delightful to see our car park full and the fairways teeming with avid golfers.

Our course is in great condition, especially given the long layoff and our very small ground-staff team, and feedback from players has been very positive.

And since Tuesday this past week with the shift to Level 2 restrictions our bar has opened, and the Wednesday school was happy to enjoy a beer on our veranda.

The tournaments committee, headed by Nelson Moonsamy, has done wonders in scheduling the games needed to play catch-up on our annual tournaments.

It’s been a real test of golf to say the least with no less than four medal rounds played in the past few weeks.

The most recent monthly mug winner is young Damien O’Connell who carded a net 66, playing in the B Division. Very nice to see our junior members flourishing.

On that note, sadly social distancing still prohibits our KidzGolfers from returning but we look forward to having them back soon.

Last weekend we played the August installment of the Alliance League and the Captain’s side came out tops with creditable score of 89 points.

Winners were Harold Horsley, Bing Opie, Dave Mulroy and Graham Coxell.
