Umdoni matrics receive assistance with tertiary education applications

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many pupils were unable to finalise their applications to institutes of higher learning.

The matric class of 2020 has had numerous interruptions during their final year of school due to the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, many were unable to finalise their applications to institutes of higher learning. Last week, the Umdoni Youth Office stepped in by assisting grade 12 pupils with these applications. Gugulesizwe High, Kwa-Hluzingqondo High, Sizathina High, Siphapheme High and Umzinto Secondary and Malangeni Secondary were visited and 600 pupils were provided with Central Applications Office forms to apply to tertiary institutions.

“The visits were also aimed at motivating pupils to choose proper career paths and apply accordingly whilst simultaneously also emphasising the message of strict adherence to Covid-19 preventative measures,” said Umdoni Municipality’s communications manager, Sphelele Cele. Youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who wish to further their education are encouraged to seek financial assistance through their municipality’s annual bursary programme. “The broader view is to ensure the alleviation of poverty, unemployment and inequality through ensuring the underprivileged are given life improvement opportunities such as education,” added Ms Cele.
