Ugu District Municipality investigates sabotage at Izingolweni reservoir

According to a statement, this has resulted in a massive water loss at the reservoir causing water outages in areas surrounding Izingolweni.

Ugu District Municipality has said in a statement it is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate a case of sabotage with malicious intent at the Izingolweni reservoir where the unauthorised opening of a scour valve was discovered on Tuesday morning this week.
According to the statement, this resulted in a massive water loss at the reservoir causing water outages in areas surrounding Izingolweni.
“This takes place at a time when water supply in the area is critical due to limited water production at the Umtamvuna Water Treatment Plant which is currently being upgraded to respond to the ever increasing demand.”
Spokesman France Zama said immediate relief supply measures had been put in place to assist the affected areas with water tankers.
“Plans to conduct repairs to the damaged valve at the reservoir are in place pending the accessibility of the road to the reservoir which is currently being blocked by residents,” he said.
