New home remains a pipe dream for elderly Oshabeni woman

Lindeni Ncama's life was turned upside down in July 2016 when her four-roomed mud house was destroyed by heavy rain.

Talk to Lindeni Ncama (61) of Oshabeni about patience, and she will tell you her tale of waiting for government to build her a proper home, and her fears that this dream might never be realised.

Ms Ncama’s life was turned upside down in July 2016 when her four-roomed mud house was destroyed by heavy rain.

“Although many government officials have promised to get back to me, none have,” she said. “Even Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s ward four councillor Khayelihle Shinga has visited and taken photos but he too never returned.

“All I need is safe house so that I can sleep peacefully at night. Things are bad here – no one is working and we cannot afford to build homes for ourselves.

“I applied for a RDP house ages ago but this was not approved. What pains me most is that I see my neighbours are all getting RDP houses but I have been rejected.”

Ms Ncama said she had lost count of the officials – including ward committee members – who had visited her and taken down all the details.

When approached for comment, Cllr Shinga confirmed that he was aware of the Ncama’s plight, adding that a report had been compiled and a response was awaited from the Department of Human Settlements.

“The RDP application was not approved. However, we had managed to find someone who had promised to fund a two-room house but after the coronavirus outbreak, everything stopped,” he said.

An email was sent to the Department of Human Settlements’ provincial spokesman, Mbulelo Baloyi on July 7 but at the time of publication no response had been received.
