Medical response officer delivers baby in Palm View in early hours of the morning

Both mother and baby are stable and recovering in hospital.

It was an early morning call out for Lazer 911 medical response officer, Nolen Arumugam who helped a mother deliver her baby girl in Palm View on Tuesday, June 30.

Mr Arumugam who was on night shift duty responded between 12.30am and 1am after the control room received a call for assistance.

“When I arrived at the house the baby had been born. I cut the umbilical cord and assisted with delivery of the afterbirth. The mother was fine and quite calm,” said Nolan.

The new mother’s husband, family and neighbours were at her side.

“Everything was over in about 20 minutes. The woman’s husband took her and the baby to Port Shepstone Hospital where they are both stable,” he said.

Assisting with the delivery was nothing new for Mr Armugam who has 30 years experience in the field. “When I worked for EMRS, I delivered a number of babies over the years,” he said.
