Police recover unlicensed firearm in Gamalakhe

Police seized a 7.5 calibre pistol with seven rounds of ammunition.

A man, aged 33, appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was arrested by the Port Shepstone Public Order Policing unit in Gamalakhe last Friday.

“While driving past a shopping centre, the POP members noticed a vehicle parked facing oncoming traffic and stopped to talk to the driver,” said police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge.

“They became suspicious and when they searched the man, found a 7.5 calibre pistol with seven rounds of ammunition.”

He was immediately placed under arrest.

The public is urged to report any illegal firearms and ammunition to their nearest police station. Firearms from deceased estates, or those no longer needed, can also be handed in.
