Disabled are helped to become more mobile

The aim is to help people with disabilities regain their independence.

In a first for the South Coast, disabled people will now find it easier to obtain a driver’s licence through a local non-profit organisation.

Magazi’s Learners and Driving for the Disabled is the brainchild of Viran Maniram who is himself disabled and went through a tough time acquiring his driver’s licence.

The organisation is registered with both the Department of Social Welfare and the Department of Transport.

For the last 22 years, Vian has been wheelchair-bound and recalled that before getting his licence, he had to use public transport to move around, which was not easy.

“After my many struggles, I wanted to make it better for others and the idea for the driving school for the disabled was born.”

The organisation not only motivates the disabled to become drivers but also encouraged them to aim further in the world of work, as most jobs require a driver’s licence.

“The disabled want to get their independence back and the driving school will help fill the gap. A qualified instructor will prepare potential drivers for their learners and licence tests, all at no cost. We cannot charge as we are a non-profit organisation.”

While those between the ages of 18 and 30 are the organisation’s target market to empower the youth, the disabled of all ages may apply.

Those who qualify must be disabled and unemployed or earning below R3,500.

Various sponsors have come on board and plans are underway to acquire a modified vehicle which will accommodate most disabilities.

Sponsors and potential drivers can contact Viran on 065-8910315.
