Cellphone thief shot in Marburg

The suspect was shot in the abdomen by an off-duty police officer.

AN off-duty police officer shot a man who robbed a woman of her cellphone in Oscar Borchers Road, Marburg last Sunday afternoon.

” The woman alerted the policeman who lives nearby,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

The officer and the victim saw the thief entering the bushes. Police were alerted and when they arrived, the area was cordoned off.

“As soon as the man emerged from the bush, the off-duty policeman shouted a warning. However,  the suspect allegedly attacked the officer and tried to disarm him.  A shot went off, hitting the suspect in the abdomen,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Cases of attempted murder and common robbery are being investigated. The suspect is in hospital under police guard.
