Bowlers descend on Margate

The Margate Week Bowls Tournament is a popular annual event and has been played every year since 1966.

48th MARGATE WEEK BOWLS TOURNAMENT

LAST Monday, John Webster, honorary member of the Margate Bowling Club and chief executive of Hibiscus Retirement Villages, rolled the first bowl to celebrate the start of the 48th Margate Week Bowls Tournament.

John was assisted by Councillor George Henderson, honorary member of Margate Bowling Club and principal of REMAX BY THE SEA.

Three hundred members, men and women from all corners of South Africa descended on Margate and have been playing all week at the Margate Bowling Club, Riverside Sports Club and The Village Bowling Club.

This popular annual event has been played every year since 1966 and is sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, REMAX BY THE SEA and Santana Holiday Resort.

Congratulations to Esta Wenzel, Ellen Cawker, Lenie Geyer, Leoni Booth and Pam Cole-Cook who have been selected to take part in the Bowls SA Zone Camp being held in Pietermaritzburg in June, we wish you well.

The finals of the midweek league will be held on June 19 at the Port Edward Bowling Club. The final log will be published next week. Please come along and give the teams your support.

PORT EDWARD

PORT Edward bowlers took to the greens to battle it out for the club novice singles last Thursday. Fierce competition saw Frank Foley just pipping Greg Fifield for the men’s title. Phillipa Rowney won the women’s section and Eve Gower was the runner-up. Credit must go to the coaches, Jokkie and Marianne van Buuren, for producing such quality players.

Jokkie and Marianne, together with Trish Steyn, were the winners of the SuperSpar two-bowl trips.

Runners-up were Leigh Warner, John Keppler and Pam Gilson. The session prize went to Barry Payn, Trevor Smith and Phillipa Rowney. Duties for May 12 -17: bar, Arthur Ronaldson; tabs, Mac McKenzie; tea, Anne Wells; eats, May 20, Gawie and Lenie Bosman; May 23, Willem Venter.

MARGATE CC

THE HAIR Shoppe women’s fours competition was played last Friday and the winners were Ina Malan, Dirkie Pretorius, Anne Bailey and Hazel Barton with a score of 23 + 11. Runners-up were Heather Roberts, Dora Vosloo, Lana du Plooy and Helen Proctor. Marie Momple was the lucky 50/50 winner.

The next women’s fours will be on June 6. On May 23, it will be the men’s Engel and Volkers men’s fours. The club’s monthly draw was won by Kobie Stander and the runner-up prize was won by Yvonne van Mentz.

Some of the club members have been involved with the Margate Week concert being performed at the Margate Bowling Club. The Saturday night show is in aid of Child Welfare and is a truly great, cheap evening for a very worthwhile beneficiary. Please contact Eileen Lloyd for further information ar 079 9098441.

WINNERS of the Margate Panelbeater’s men’s 2-4-2 last Friday were Chris Forward and Ken Tonge on 4+47, runners-up, Bill Brown and Rennie Geyer on 4+4, first session, Clive Edmundson and Martiens Olivier on 2+8 and second session, Ron Canning and Ian Hutton on 2+12.

Winners of the Uvongo Spar vouchers last Thursday were Athol Robertson, Derek McKecknie and Eric Chamier.

The Margate Week show ‘Magic Moments’ will be held in aid of Child Welfare this Saturday (10th) at 6.30 for 7pm in the clubhouse. For tickets, contact the Child Welfare office.

The next sponsored tournament is the Manaba KwikSpar women’s 2-4-2 on the morning of Friday, May 16. Contact Ellen Cawker at 082 8019339 or enter names on the entry forms on the notice boards. Visitors are welcome to enter teams.

The next quiz evening will be held next Wednesday (14th) and the next bingo evening is on Monday, June 9.

Sunday morning bowls is played in mufti and everyone is welcome to come and join in a morning of fun. Bowlers and non-bowlers are welcome.

THE TOPS Port Edward and GP Security mixed pairs played last Friday was won by Irene Filmer and Martiens Zietsman, with runners-up Maureen la Grange and John Keppler. Second session was won by Pat Miller and Mike Carter, with the 50/50 board going to John Keppler.

Winners of The Dolphin Pub and Grill men’s pairs played last Sunday were Andreas van der Linde and Steve Rennie. Runners-up were Jimmy McAllister and John Keppler, and second session winners were Kotie Snyman and Hannes du Plessis. The 50/50 board went to Ray Elders.

The Webb Restaurant women’s pairs due to take place on Friday, May 9, has been postponed, and the new date will be advised.

Good bowling to the men’s first Saturday league team playing at Port Shepstone this Saturday, and the fours team playing at The Bell.

ALTHOUGH Thursday was a public holiday, there was a good turnout for the Mariner’s open fours. The competition was won by Ina Malan, Dirkie Pretorius, Carl Volker and Corrie Malan. Runners-up were Aubrey Hood, Glen Allen, John Keppler and Dice Graaf. First session winners were Chris Faber, Doug Campbell, Hilda Tod and Lana du Plooy, and second session went to Gary Hess, Lucas Barnard, Norman Isherwood and Ali Mitchell. The 50/50 was won by Hugh Purtell.

The quiz in aid of the SPCA will be this Friday (9th), at 6 for 6.30pm and the next Saturday league will take place this Saturday (10th). Good luck to everyone playing in Margate Week.

Bar duty May 12-18: Graham Fisher. The person on bar duty needs to be at the club half an hour before the competition time, open the club and bar and then lock up afterwards. At the end of the duty, keys must be handed to the next person on duty. Note that if unable to do the duty, a replacement must be found.

ALAN Tyers and Denise Palframan were the winners of the Execudec mixed 2-4-2, followed by Clive Bignell and Marie Momple. Sessions went to Carl Volker and Dirkie Pretorius, and Don Fowler and Rosalie Bloom. Ivan Hosken won the 50/50.

The next sponsored competitions at the club are the Hibiscus Retirement Villages’ men’s trips on Tuesday 13th, the Wingnuts Plumbing mixed 2-4-2, Monday 19th, and the Hibiscus Insurance Brokers’ mixed trips on Thursday, May 22nd.

THE HARBOUR View SuperSpar mixed 2-4-2 played last week was won by Dennis Graham and Astrid Jackson. Ty and Doreen Ferguson came second and session winners were John Payn and Kathy Simpson .

The initial round robin stage of the club singles has been completed with the exception of one game and men through to the next round are Dennis Graham,Eric Griersen and John Roelefse, and women are Doreen Ferguson and Tammy Gibson, with third place to be decided next Wednesday. The next competition will be the J Cee Sounds mixed pairs on May 12.

THE CAPTAIN’S Anchor mixed fours will be the next competition and will be held this Friday afternoon, (9th). The starting time is 1.15 for 1.30pm and the convenor is Tony Olivant, with catering by Patti Mullen and Penny Hartmann. Next Tuesday, (13th) is the Jaxx/Venture Inn men’s trips and the convenor is Steve O’Moore and catering by Sharolyn Dacey and Geraldine Celliers. WINNERS of the weekly Friday afternoon competition were Norman and Judy Aiston and Hana Svoboda, with Arthur and Miriam Seager and Lionel France coming second. The session prize was won by Malky and Isobel McManus and Dennis Lewis.

Thanks to the Hibberdene SuperSpar for its generous sponsorship. The women’s league fours will be held at the club this Saturday afternoon, but there will be rinks available for social bowls.

The next competition will be this Friday afternoon at 1.30pm, sponsored by Hibberdene Pharmacy.
