Stellar year for young karateka Wian

After being awarded his Protea colours, he was chosen to represent South Africa at the AUSC Region 5 Championship, held in Swakopmund Namibia.

UGU region achieved many honours during the recent Annual KZN Karate Awards ceremony held in Durban last weekend, where all karateka from Kwazulu Natal are commended for their achievements throughout the year.

Wian de Beer, a karate student from Suid Natal Karate was announced Junior Sportsman of the Year for 2019 at this prestigious function.

This is the first time a karateka from the Ugu region has achieved such a prestigious award.

Wian is currently unbeaten on a national level and achieved gold medals at both SA Karate National Championships held in Cape Town and Durban earlier this year.

He also achieved a gold medal at the Arnold Classics Sports Festival held in Johannesburg.

After being awarded his Protea colours, he was chosen to represent South Africa at the AUSC Region 5 Championship, held in Swakopmund Namibia.

Seven countries from the Southern African region were represented. Wian managed to fight his way through and win a bronze medal.

He was also selected to represent South Africa at the Karate World Youth Training Camp and Cup 2019 for children U12 held in Umag, Croatia in Europe.

This annual event is attended by 80 countries worldwide.

After competing against the best karateka in the world, Wian managed a respectable 7th place.

“We are extremely proud of Wian’s hard work and achievements this year, especially being crowned KZN Karate Junior Sportsman of the year 2019,” said Sensei Coenie Vrey.
