Under the gavel at Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court

Cases included murder, drunken driving, theft and assault.

CASES dealt with recently at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court include:

• A 26-year-old man, charged with a murder which occurred at the Roseville informal settlement in Umzinto, appeared last Wednesday for bail application. The investigating officer informed the court that the accused had a pending case for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. It was also mentioned that although the man had initially fled, he had handed himself over to police the following day. Bail of R1 000 was granted and he was instructed to report to the his nearest police station every morning.

• A man from Ward 14, accused of a drunken driving offence in Scott Street on December 18 last year, was released on warning and is expected to reappear on August 21 for plea.

• A young man was arrested after allegedly stealing from a woman in 2017. It is believed that he had taken R5 000 cash and gold watch worth R300. After several court appearances, in July last year he failed to appear and a warrant of arrest was issued. He was rearrested and appeared on August 7. He remains in custody and is expected to appear on August 14 for a formal bail application.

• A man accused of assaulting someone with a plank in Malangeni on August 4 made his first appearance. He was released on R800 bail and will appear again on August 27.
