Pupils were taught that one of the easiest ways to prevent diseases such as diarrhoea, scabies, listeriosis, hepatitis and the spreading of ringworm infestations is to wash their hands with soap.

Vasie Manawer from the Department of Health and Environment addressed the school on the importance of personal hygiene and the proper use of toilets.

School health team leader Sister Shiela Kalidas also gave a presentation about diseases that are spread as a result of not practicing proper hand-washing.

All gr 1 pupils and specifically referred pupils from grades 2 to 7 were screened by nurses from the DOH’s School Health Services Team at the end of May.

Any pupils who require further medical attention were referred to local clinics or a hospital.
