Margate Moves: Take a musical drive

Get to the Ronnie Baker Hall next Sunday (16th) at 2.30pm. Cost is R5 per person which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.

Local outfit `The Gentry’ will entertain at the next supper theatre offering at Margate Retirement Village. `Driving Miss Daisy’ will take you on a musical journey with the boys in the band and their fabulous vocalist Princess Dube. They pay tribute to greats such as Simon and Garfunkel, Aretha Franklin, Miriam Makeba and Michael Jackson. The show at the Azalea Hall takes place on Saturday, June 22.

Pack a picnic supper and your own liquid refreshments. Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets at R80 per person are on sale from the admin or RAC offices at the village – phone 039 312 5000 to book.

Regarded by many as one of the greatest musicals that was ever produced `Show Boat’ starring Howard Keel, Ava Gardner and Kathryn Grayson is the next DVD classic movie to be screened at the village. Do it in public

`World Wide Knit and Crochet in Public Day’ takes place this Saturday (8th). If you want to be part of this amazing initiative get to the Ramsgate Whale Deck Enviro Centre from 9am to midday.

Take along your latest project or your knitting needles/crochet hook for a fun morning of yarn bombing.

Chairs will be provided along with knitting or crochet lessons. Any donations of yarn will be most welcome.

Tea and/or coffee, as well as prego rolls, will be offered for sale by the Ramsgate Conservancy.

Big bazaar

Congregants at the Margate NG Church are hard at work baking tasty treats and making amazing arts and crafts for the annual fete.

The `Big Bazaar’ will once again take place at St Mike’s beach – in the giant marquee on Saturday (22nd) from 8am.

Fabulous fare will be on offer as well as lots of games including the ever-popular tombola stall for the younger set and young at heart. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy a delicious lunch – this is it.

Good vibrations

Ramsgate’s premier music venue, Rocky Ridge, is once again hosting a weekend of top class entertainment. South Wolves will be on stage this Saturday (8th). Entry is R40 per head. Venue opens 6pm and the band entertains from 8pm.

Sunday Blues (9th) features home-grown band – Braxton Hix and friends. Entry is R50 – venue opens at midday and the music starts at 1pm.

Choral concerts

The acclaimed Hibiscus Choir will perform a series of concerts this month. `A Song For Everyone’ has its debut at the Margate Methodist Church Hall next Saturday (15th) at 2.30pm. This will be followed by a show at Ramsgate Retirement Village on the 19th also at 2.30pm and there’s an evening concert at the Ramsgate Lions’ Club community centre on the 21st at 6.30pm with the grand finale being staged at the Village Bowling Club (Margate Retirement Village) on the 25th at 6.30pm.

Strings and things

World-class musicians Elena and Boris Kerimov will form a string trio with David Snaith to perform a wonderful selection of classical music at a Sunday Soiree. The venue is Riverbend Crocodile Farm this Sunday (9th) from 2.30pm.

Tickets at R120 per person are on sale from the farm’s reception (9am to 4.30pm).

Tea or coffee and cream scones will be available during the interval at R32.

Street party fun

Schools in the province close next week for the winter holidays. And if it is the holiday season it is Mardi Gras time. The Margate Business Association has three street parties planned and the dates to save are June 19 and 26 and July 3.

Marine Drive will be closed off from 6pm to 10pm and offers a feast of street food and lots of stalls selling unusual wares.

Join a pride

If you would like to find out more about Lionism and the work the service club undertakes then join the Ramsgate Lions Club at the Hibiscus Mall in Margate this Saturday (8th). The pride will hold a membership drive there from 9am to 1pm.
