R1-bn Ray Nkonyeni Municipality budget approved

The mayor said the country was still in an economically weak position, presenting challenges to the national and provincial government when allocating adequate resources to communities.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council approved its budget for the 2019/2020 fiscal year on Tuesday this week, despite the DA voting against the approval.

The DA said there was not enough money earmarked for maintenance of infrastructure and questioned if the municipality’s salary budget was in line with regulations.

The party added it felt unnecessary expenditure should be cut and more money allocated to maintenance and infrastructure to ensure service delivery.

By way of vote, council resolved to adopt the budget of more than R1-billion.

The EFF and IFP abstained from the vote.

Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said she was disappointed that some councillors did not want the budget to be approved when so many people were dependent on this approval to get services.

The mayor said the country was still in an economically weak position, presenting challenges to the national and provincial government when allocating adequate resources to communities.

She emphasised that these economic challenges put pressure on revenue generation and collection levels, forcing the municipality to adopt creative revenue collection and enhancement mechanisms.

Cllr Mqwebu indicated that the Operating Expenditure Budget represented a 16 percent increase from the 2018/2019 fiscal year.

“The 2019/2020 Capital Expenditure Budget seeks to deliver the infrastructural needs of the people while being mindful of the municipal resolve to remain financially prudent.”

This budget will be divided into Cluster Capital Projects, Municipal Wide Projects and Departmental Capital Projects.

The detailed approved 2019/2020 Final Budget is accessible on the municipality’s website www.rnm.gov.za
