Margate Moves: Some superheroes wear slippers

To take part in Slipper Day all you need is a R10 wristband to wear your favourite slippers to school, work, university, gym, the shops or just around the house.

YOU don’t have to wear a cape to be a superhero – some superheroes wear slippers.

Slipper Day which takes place today, Friday, May 10 is an annual Reach For A Dream initiative to raise awareness and funds for children with life-threatening illnesses. To take part in Slipper Day all you need is a R10 wristband to wear your favourite slippers to school, work, university, gym, the shops or just around the house.

You can purchase your wristband from any Pick n Pay, Wimpy or Dis-Chem stores. And by wearing your wristband and slippers you will also get a free coffee (or hot chocolate for children under 12 years) from Wimpy outlets.

Something classical

The Durban City Orchestra has around 50 members, made up of amateur, experienced and professional musicians from diverse backgrounds. Their repertoire combines the classical and symphonic genres with popular and contemporary styles. The orchestra, which has been in existence since 1888 when it was formed as the Durban Philharmonic Society, is making its debut appearance at the Azalea Hall at Margate Retirement Village on Saturday, May 18. It is a registered non-profit organisation and is currently self-funded. The Residents’ Activities Committee (RAC) is delighted to host the concert which starts at 6.30pm. Movie magic

The next classic movie show at Margate Retirement Village is the Jane Froman story `With a Song In My Heart’ starring Susan Hayward, Rory Calhoun, Thelma Ritter and David Wayne. Save the date – Sunday, May 19. The Ronnie Baker Hall is the venue and take note the movie starts at 2.30pm sharp. Cost is R5 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.

More music

Ann Jangle will entertain at Ramsgate’s premium live music venue Rocky Ridge (up Fascadale Road), this Saturday (11th). The venue is open from 6pm. Auburn Sound will perform at this Sunday’s (12th) gig. Venue opens at midday and the music gets underway from 1pm. Entry is R40 per person.

Choral concert

The Hibiscus Choir is hard at work rehearsing for its forthcoming concert series `A Song for Everyone’.

The first performance will be at the Margate Methodist Church Hall on Saturday, June 15 at 2.30pm.

This will be followed by a show at Ramsgate Retirement Village on the 19th also at 2.30pm and there’s an evening concert at Ramsgate Lions’ Club’s community centre on the 21st at 6.30pm and at the Village Bowling Club (Margate Retirement Village) on the 25th at 6.30pm.

Surf’s up

Calling all wave riders – there is a great surf compo you must enter. Hosted by South Shore Surf Club the Retro Surfing Classic takes place at Ramsgate’s Ski-boat Bay on Saturday, June 1 from 8am.

Swap racquets for clubs

Southbroom Tennis Club invites golfers to support its fund-raiser in support of development tennis. The club is hosting a golf day which takes place at Southbroom Golf Club on Friday, May 24. The format is a fourball alliance with two scores to count. There are some super prizes on offer and after play, there will be snacks and entertainment. To book contact the Pro Shop at 039 3166051.

Be moonstruck

Talented Barbie Meyer will enthral with her latest show which is being staged as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast. `Marico Moon’ is the charming title of her latest Herman Charles Bosman tale and proceeds will go to South Coast Hospice.

The venue is the Ramsgate Lions Club’s community hall in Glenmarkie Road, Ramsgate and the date to diarise is Friday, May 24 at 6pm. Tickets cost R300 which includes a traditional three-course `boerekos’ meal. Guests are invited to dress up in their kruisbande and vellies and listen to the stories of Oom Schalk. Condolences

Deepest sympathy is extended to Lorna Goldman and family on the recent death of her beloved husband Graham. His memorial service was held at St Margaret’s Anglican Church in Margate last Thursday.
