Margate Moves: Goodbye bikers, hello bowlers

From all accounts the three-day festival proved to be a huge success with top class music acts as well as biking stunt shows and enduro races.

AFTER a weekend of high-octane South Coast Bike Fest action, Margate shifts gears and goes from black leather and boots to whites and flats.

The red carpet this week is being rolled out to welcome bowlers from all over the country to the annual Margate Week Bowls Tournament which started on Monday this week.

One of the highlights of the tournament is the entertainment on offer. This year’s show is a delightful sing-along titled `Remember When’. Produced by Yvonne Bausek and the Hibiscus Amateur Theatrical Society (Hats) it will take audiences on a nostalgic musical journey.

Tickets cost R40 per person and wors rolls will be on sale at R20 each. Take note booking is essential. For details phone `BT’ King at hospice at 082 7280233.

Later this month Margate Bowling Club will also host the National Moths Bowls Tournament. It takes place from May 26 to 31.

Take a bow

Despite torrential rain (some areas reported 450mm in 48 hours), flooded roads, beach wash-aways and debris left in the wake of the storm that hit the coast last Monday and Tuesday, the organisers of South Coast Bike Fest miraculously managed to stage the event. And from all accounts the three-day festival proved to be a huge success with top class music acts as well as biking stunt shows and enduro races. The action was extended with great drives out to the picturesque regions of KwaNzimakwe and KwaXolo.

The festival which boasted beachfront bars, stages, a village market, expo zones as well as food courts offered visitors a great vibe throughout the weekend.

And the Pals in Paradise Mass Parade from St Michael’s beach to Margate attracted more than 500 bikers.

Event planner, Vicky Wentzel and her hard-working team are to be congratulated for their tireless efforts to ensure this year’s event took place. Take a well-deserved bow (make it a deep one).

Great effort

A huge thank you goes to everyone who stepped up and helped clean up the beachfronts after the deluge.

It was great to see communities rallying together to collect loads of debris that washed up on the beaches. Armed with rubber gloves and bin bags they collected mountains of rubbish and they piled the vegetation which will be left in heaps to dry out until it can be burned.

Many property owners have suffered serious damage and many roads have been left in a dangerous state – the left hand lane of Valley Road in Margate has been completely washed away. Motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution.

Good music

This Saturday boasts an auspicious date – `May the Fourth’ (Be With You) – Ramsgate’s premium live music venue Rocky Ridge (up Fascadale Road), will celebrate with a Star Wars themed evening featuring two groups `Buckshot’ and `All Those Yesterdays’. The double header will offer a great variety of music. Doors and kitchen open at 6pm and the bands are on stage from 8pm. Entry is R40 per person. Go and dig out your favourite Storm Troopers’ gear and head off to the ridge for some gallactic fun this Saturday. Save the date – Ann Jangle will perform at Rocky Ridge on May 11.

Eco-market

The next community eco-conscious pop-up market takes place in front of the Artists’ Gallery in Marine Drive, Ramsgate this Saturday (4th).

Oom Schalk

The Rotary Club of Hibiscus has a brilliant fund-raiser `Marico Moon’ coming up. Everyone is invited to an evening of Herman Charles Bosman tales told by renowned story-teller, Barbie Meyer. Proceeds will go to South Coast Hospice.

The venue is the Ramsgate Lions Club’s community hall in Glenmarkie Road, Ramsgate and the date to diarise is Friday, May 24 at 6pm. Tickets cost R300 which includes a traditional `boerekos’ meal. Guests are invited to dress up in their kruisbande and vellies and listen to the stories of Oom Schalk. Take note there are bar facilities so you will need to bring your own.
